Right now, life is a bit crazy for us. As mentioned in a recent post, I'm back in "Survival Mode" because we are in the process of relocating to a new suburb. We are staying in a temporary residence while we're trying to sell the old house and waiting to get into the new house. We're doing a lot of going back and forth. Yikes! My head is spinning!
When I heard from BzzAgent about the new Bon Appetit Steam-Baked dinners I was thrilled to get a chance to try them. This is perfect for our present situation. I've been trying to cook easy but delicious, half way healthy meals in a small kitchen without my usual cookware and kitchen gadgets from home. It's been a bit tough, let me tell you.
These meals are made with high quality ingredients, no preservatives and were inspired by meals from a world-renowned chef. Each Bon Appetit meal kit contains 2 parchment bags. Each special parchment bag contains a full meal for one person - a meat, satisfying starch and vegetables. They come in 8 varieties: Beef in Red Wine Sauce, Pork in Chipotle BBQ Sauce, Creamy Pesto Chicken, Smoked Apple & Uncured Bacon Chicken, Lemon Butter Chicken, Rosemary Chicken, Roasted Garlic Chicken and
Chicken Florentine. The special parchment bag locks in the steam and seals in the food's own juices making it tender juicy and delicious.
Bon Appetit Steam-Baked meals are super easy and delicious. You literally pull the bag out of the freezer, place the steam bag on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. When the time is up - you cut open the bag and slide a full meal right onto your plate. (You can microwave them, but it is recommended to cook in the oven for more even baking)
As a member of BzzAgent I received coupons for two free Bon Appetit meal kits. I got the Smoked Apple and Uncured Bacon Chicken and the Beef in Red Wine Sauce. We decided to make the chicken tonight, as you can see from the photos above. (Note this is not the kitchen at my house…it's the unattractive kitchen at the temporary residence…lol)
I baked the bags in the oven for 32 minutes, as per the instructions on the package. It was very easy to cut them open and slide out right onto the plate and it looked delicious.
We had a slight problem. The chicken was still cold inside, after cooking for 32 minutes. We covered our plates with paper towels and heated in the microwave for 2 minutes each and they were all set. We are not sure why the issue - not sure if there something wrong with the oven here at our temporary residence - we have baked cookies and didn't really have trouble. We are going to save the Beef in Red Wine Sauce until we get to the new house with new oven and try it then.
Taste and Texture:
We both thought the sauce was delicious. It had just the right amount of kick without being too spicy. The chicken was very tender and delicious. The apples and veggies (potatoes, belgian round carrots, and red pepper) were delicious. The carrots were still slightly crisp (I prefer them a little softer, but they were still very good). We really enjoyed the meal. The only negative I can say - is we wished the meal had less sodium (1420 mg!) It looked delicious on the plate.
The Bon Appetit frozen Steam-Baked Meals for 2 retail for about $8.99 on average. However, I bought them at Walmart where they were priced at $6.99 - which I thought was reasonable for 2 complete dinners. I read a few other people's reviews and they felt the portions were more like a lunch size. I thought the portion size was fine - but if you wanted something more, you could pair a nice salad with it and some crusty warm bread or rolls.
I give the Smoked Apple and Uncured Bacon Chicken a thumbs up. We really enjoyed the meal. We will definitely try some of the other varieties. These would be great for anyone who needs a quick, delicious complete meal.
As a BzzAgent - I received a coupon for 2 complimentary Bon Appetit frozen Steam-Baked meal kits in exchange for an honest review/opinion. I also received some additional coupons to share with others. I received no monetary compensation. I was not required to write a positive review.
