Book Review: A Lifetime of Laughing and Loving with Autism by R. Wayne Gilpin

Are you the parent or relative of a child with Autism? Maybe you are a teacher or provider to someone living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. If so - the book shown above, compiled by R. Wayne Gilpin, will hit home for you. It will touch your heart and inspire you. It may make you feel validated, not so alone as a parent of a child with special needs. It may bring a tear to your eye, but this book will certainly also make you smile.

The author,  R. Wayne Gilpin has dedicated this book to his son Alex. His life literally changed the world of autism because he inspired the creation of Future Horizons, which has become THE largest publisher of autism materials in the world. Future Horizons also offers titles on Asperger's Syndrome, and Sensory Processing Disorder, sensory issues in more than 40 countries worldwide. Many authors working with Future Horizons are considered leaders in this field.

I have a 4 year old son who has SPD - Sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD and I felt a tug on my heart strings while reading this book.  I have heard and read that children with SPD and autism display a lot of similar sensory differences which cause similar reactions to situations and people sometimes.  Several of the stories in this book seemed very familiar with the daily challenges and chuckles we experience, raising our precious son. So I think parents or teachers of kids with SPD will be able to relate to this book as well.

This book has a collection of endearing anecdotes from the author's life in parenting his son Alex. It also includes funny, inspiring, heart felt stories from other parents and teachers of kids with autism.  There are also sections with quotes and stories from school, home, going out into the "real world" and into the workplace. There are also some examples of "dumb things" that parents, teachers and school officials sometimes say…which I am sure will be familiar to some readers. I also loved the section with very matter of fact emails written by Alex and cute examples of his sense of humor.

This book is an easy, and enjoyable read. Definitely one you'll want to read and maybe share with other parents or teachers of a child affected with autism.  I feel like I learned a lot from the real, true-life stories in these pages and urge others to check this book out, too!
